Majestic Model 20 (By Grigsby-Grunow)
This early ‘30s cathedral-style, 8-tube superhetrodyne set was manufactured by Grigsby-Grunow of Chicago. You may find it listed under Grigsby-Grunow rather than Majestic. This example has the original finish and plays with good sensitivity and tone. It has ornate wooden knobs, lighted dial, and a large 10-inch speaker. The chassis employs two 45 audio output tubes in a push-pull circuit. The black knob on the rear of the chassis is the antenna trimmer. There are two noteworthy design “issues” associated with this model. First, the accessibility of components under the chassis is very difficult. Secondly, it weighs an incredible 77 pounds—due, in part, to the heavy speaker and power transformer. The weight makes it somewhat impractical to ship. Aside from the cost of shipping, it would be difficult to package the set to protect against damage from dropping, etc. © 2005, Doug Criner
